Treatment for insect bites ...

The type of treatment depends on the kind of reaction. Cleanse the affected area with soap and water to remove any contaminants left by the insect. If the symptoms include inflammation, redness and pain, then an ice pack will help to reduce the swelling and discomfort, but make sure to wrap it first in a clean cloth before applying. Avoid scratching to prevent breaking the skin and potentially causing an infection to start. The itchy sensation can be calmed by applying calamine lotion directly on the bite - this will also soothe your skin. You may find that adding baking soda to bathwater lessens the discomfort. Antihistamines, such as diphenhydramine can provide fast-acting relief by reducing the intensity of symptoms. More severe reactions (e.g., weakness, shortness of breath, difficulty swallowing, or chest discomfort), especially those that involve other areas of the body beyond the site of the bite, will require immediate attention at the hospital.
