Treat nail infections promptly ...

Toenails are nearly seven times more likely to develop a fungal infection (called onychomycosis) than fingernails. That's because the warm, moist environment created by socks and shoes is ideal for promoting fungal growth. If you develop a fungal infection, seek treatment from your doctor. Untreated fungal infections often spread to other nails. Infected toenails can become disfigured and turn color (yellow, gray, brown, or black). Other signs of advanced infection include brittleness and cracking, as well as separation from the nail bed. Oral and topical treatment options are available through your doctor.
