Damage control for your hair

Damage control for your hair

Common causes of damaged hair include the excessive use of heat-generating styling devices (blow dryers, curling irons, etc.), UV rays (sun exposure, lights, tanning beds), chemicals treatments (hair colour, perms, relaxers, even pool chemicals), weather conditions, or poor diet (deficient in proteins and essential fatty acids). Modify your styling and lifestyle habits to prevent additional damage and improve the condition of stressed hair. Always use a hair conditioner to counteract the drying effects from washing. Avoid blow drying the hair completely, use a cooler setting, and occasionally try air-drying. Consider leave-in conditioners with UV filters for added hydration and protection. Use a low or no ammonia hair colour. If you use permanent dyes, try ones that only require a minimal amount of time to process – some work in as little as 10 minutes! Be gentle when brushing wet or damp hair – hair is most vulnerable and weakest when it’s wet. Style or detangle with a wide-toothed comb. Use a clarifying shampoo and moisturizing conditioner after you swim. Ensure that you’re getting an adequate in-take of protein rich foods (e.g., chicken, fish, nuts). Eat foods that are rich in essential fatty acids (from botanical sources).
