New advances: The use of peptides in skin care

Recent biotechnological advances have led to the development of promising peptides that are both synthetically and naturally derived. Peptides consist of protein fragments that have a variety of effects on cell function. Each peptide appears to exert different effects on the skin. There is also some evidence that these tiny molecules can reduce the signs of aging by inhibiting the breakdown of collagen, reducing hyperpigmentation, stimulating skin metabolism and accelerating the healing processes of the skin. A key feature of their biologic activity is that certain peptides have the ability to signal and activate fibroblasts (connective tissue cells) to produce collagen in the skin, resulting in the improved appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
