Why do white bumps form under the eyes?

These bumps are likely whiteheads called milia. Milia form when dead skin cells and sebum (oil) become trapped under the top layer of your skin. The embedded cells turn into tiny cysts that appear as white beads just below the skin’s surface. Milia can occur on the skin, mucous membranes (the inner surface of the cheek), or the border of your lips. Under normal conditions, a whitehead would rupture and clear up, but milia form a thin hardened cover that turn into cysts, making it difficult for natural expulsion. Sometimes the cysts can resolve on their own, but in some cases, medical treatment by a dermatologist may be required. Avoid skin care products and makeup that are occlusive (obstruct pores), especially around the thinner skin of your eyes. Look for powder-based products and those listed as non-comedogenic. Also, try to apply moisturizers with a lighter consistency around milia-prone areas. Consider using a gentle exfoliating skin care product to encourage the shedding of dead skin cells. Finally, remember to always cleanse your skin once in the morning and again in the evening to remove the daily accumulations of makeup, oil and impurities.
