After cleansing, the second step of a basic three-step skin care regimen is the use of an astringent or toner. Available for dry, normal, oily and acne-prone skin types, these clarifying products can play a beneficial role in eliminating excess oil and removing any residue left on the skin after washing. A word of caution though, astringents and toners can irritate sensitive skin, especially if they have an alcohol base. Toners can offer other benefits that include restoring the pH level of your skin and preparing a clean surface to receive a moisturizer. Some toners are formulated with anti-acne agents, antioxidants, lipids and other key ingredients.
