You are not alone! Also called the “Curse of the Celts”, over 13 million North Americans have rosacea, which is a long-lasting, non-scarring skin condition that is often misdiagnosed as adult acne. Common symptoms include inappropriate flushing, persistent facial redness, visible dilated blood vessels and bouts of inflammation that cause small bumps to form. If the disorder involves the eyes, it is referred to as ocular rosacea – symptoms include red, sore or gritty eyes or eyelids. In severe cases, rosacea can result in thickened skin and even disfigurement. Of particular concern is the formation of an enlarged or bulbous nose (rhinophyma). Without medical treatment, symptoms can get progressively worse, however, under proper care by a dermatologist, rosacea can be successfully managed.
