Did you know that there are two primary types of human skin: glaborous skin (non-hairy) and hair-bearing skin. Glaborous skin is found on the palms of your hands and soles of your feet, and they have defining features such as a thick epidermis (the outermost layer of skin) with finger/foot prints. The characteristics of hair-bearing skin can vary greatly depending on the body part, for example, your scalp is vastly different from your arm. The various sites will also contain a contrast of other anatomical structures. Oil glands (sebaceous glands) are found attached to hair follicles. Skin is thickest on the palms and soles (1.2mm to 4.7mm) and thinnest around your eyes and on the lips, whereas facial skin is approximately 0.12mm in thickness and on the body it is about 0.6mm. Given the wide range of attributes for various body parts, you will need to select skin care products to address differing needs. For example, lighter creams and lotions that are water-based can be used on oily skin and reserve thinker oil-based products for areas that are especially prone to dryness.
