Tea tree oil is extracted from the leaves of a tree called Melaleuca alternifolia that is indigenous to Australia. Aborigines chewed the leaves of the tea tree to alleviate symptoms associated with infections, colds and general ailments. Today, the oil is considered to be a potent antiseptic that also has antibacterial and antifungal properties. Tea tree oil can also be used for treating acne, bug bites, boils and minor wounds. Because of tea tree oils varied benefits, it is a popular ingredient in cosmetic formulations and can be found in shampoos, soaps, creams and skin cleansers. Keep in mind that many of these skin care products contain such low concentrations that their intended antibacterial effect is either diminished or non-existent.
