The outer layer of the hair, called the cuticle, can be damaged through excessive sun exposure and the regular use of hair dryers, curling/straightening irons, and chemical treatments (e.g., hair colouring, bleaching, perming). If your hair appears stressed, try specially formulated conditioners to restore moisture and give added protection. Hair conditioners provide multiple benefits: they contain humectants to help your hair to retain moisture; some include hydrolyzed proteins that can actually penetrate and repair or strengthen the hair shaft; and they can regulate the acidity level of your hair to enhance the shine and bounce of each strand. Conditioners also act as detanglers by coating the surface with polymers, which makes the hair smoother and more manageable. Furthermore, they can provide some protection against the damaging effects from heat-generating styling devices, such as blow dryers and curling irons. If dandruff is a concern, try medicated conditioners with an antifungal agent, such as pyrithione zinc, to effectively treat the flaking caused by the Malassezia yeast.
