Paronychia is an inflammatory condition that affects the nail folds (the skin that hangs over the side of the nail). It is caused by frequent exposure to moisture, consequently, paronychia is commonly seen in children due to nail-biting and finger-sucking. It can also begin with trauma to the area from a hangnail, an ingrown nail, or from pushing or trimming the cuticle. The presence of bacteria or fungus can often trigger an infection that is accompanied by redness and painful swelling of the area around the nail. If the infection worsens and remains untreated for an extended period of time, the nail plate can become disfigured. This soft tissue infection around a fingernail may need medical treatment with oral antibiotics or applications of either an antifungal or antiseptic lotion. Severe cases may require a qualified physician to drain the infected nail fold. Avoid prolonged exposure to water. Try wearing gloves when washing dishes and reduce time soaking in the bath. Keep your hands protected with the regular use of enriched lotions.
