Antibacterial soaps and cleansers are becoming increasingly popular, particularly among those whose work brings them into frequent contact with the public. Triclosan and alcohol are common active ingredients. Given the great variety of bacteria, effectiveness of antibacterial soaps and cleansers is not guaranteed against the entire spectrum of bacteria. Never overuse antibacterial agents, such as triclosan, since excessive exposure may actually encourage the bacteria to evolve and form resistance to these agents. Also, keep in mind that cleansers and soaps of this type are very drying and can contribute to eczema flare-ups. To minimize skin irritation and dryness, apply a moisturizing lotion immediately after washing.
