For those times when you’re not able to wash your hands with soap and water, antibacterial hand wipes or alcohol-based hand sanitizers can be convenient alternatives. While not as effective as good old soap and water, these products can help out in a pinch. Occasional use of antibacterial skin sanitizers are fine, but overuse could potentially pose a health risk. Also, keep these products out of reach from children – the active agents (ethanol or isopropyl alcohol) are toxic if ingested in sufficient quantities. The high concentrations of these active ingredients are intended to kill viruses and bacterial on contact. For proper use, dispense a small amount (the size of your thumbnail) on the palm of one hand and rub vigorously over the entire surface of both hands, including your nails. As a general rule, you haven’t used a sufficient quantity if the product is completely absorbed in less than 15 seconds. The harshness of these ingredients tend to dry out your hands and can cause irritation, so make sure to replenish the lost moisture with a good hand lotion following use.
